Today's report from Mike's Ride for Make-A-Wish:
- Today: Today was a day of wind! The first 41 miles, the rating was +3.0. Factor in the final 65 miles, and it was -2.0 for the day. That says it all right there!
- Final Stats for today:
Started at 7:15 am and finished at 6:00 pm. (Ugh!!)
Covered 106 miles, average speed of 13.0 mph. Max speed - 39.1 mph
Riding time - 8 hours and 10 minutes. Feet of elevation climbed - 3828'.
Wind - out of the SSW. On the "Hurt/Help" Wind scale, today was a -2.0.
The "Hurt/Help" Wind Scale is my way of saying "this is how much the wind hurt/helped me over the course of the day". It can Hurt me up to a -5, or help me up to a +5.
- Thank-yous for today:
Jayson and Mike |
Thank you to Eric and Brenda Gerken and their son Jayson for serving as my host family last night. Jayson is a Make-A-Wish recepient, and is one of the coolest, most out-going, upbeat kids I have ever met! He just brightens up the room. Jayson has a very important day coming up on June 25. He is celebrating his 8th birthday! I'm inviting you to send him a birthday card to help him have funn as he turns the big 8.0. A lot of people in Fremont and other places know Jayson. He's kind of a local celebrity and would be very willing to send you his autograph if you want him to. (-:) His address is "Jayson Gerken, 1414 Jones Ave, Fremont, NE 68025" Thank you!
MY FIRST INJURY!! |
Well, I sustained my first injury today. I ran into a rather feisty rosebush outside the courthouse in Blair. Ok, it looked a lot more gruesome before I washed the blood off!
Karen Madsen - Blair |
New friends at the courthouses. On the left is Karen Madsen from the Washington County Courthouse. The other two ladies are my support drivers for June 3 and 4. Denise Hummel (center) and Jeanie Holtmeier. They were a HUGE help today!!!
The "gang" in Tekamah! |
-
At the Burt County Courthouse in Tekamah, we found a lively bunch of ladies who made Denise, Jeanie and me feel very welcome! They are (l to r) Michele Quick, Karen Grass, Marge Shumake and Joni Renshaw. (Unfortunately we're all looking at a different camera...) Merna Reckes |
In West Point at the Cuming County Courthouse
we met Merna Reckes (or Recka?)
Sandy Zoubek |
In Stanton, we met Sandy Zoubek.
A delightful surprise waiting for me at my host home in Stanton! I stayed with John and Cathy Doggett. Cathy's day care children made this sign for me. (-:)

- Quote of the Day:
The bicycle will accomplish more for women's sensible dress than all the reform movements that have ever been waged. - Author Unknown (from Demerarest's Family Magazine, 1895)
“The bicycle is just as good company as most husbands and, when it gets old and shabby, a woman can dispose of it and get a new one without shocking the entire community.” - Ann Strong (Minneapolis Tribune, 1895)

Check the Spin Home Wisdom page for my new story, "But, Just for a Moment There...".
- Closing thoughts for the day:
It was a very challenging day today. I must admit that I had a brief pity party late this afternoon! But, I just kept cranking and eventually arrived at my destination. That's a pretty good truism in life in general. It's late, so I've got to get this posted. Thanks for your prayers. Keep telling everyone about the ride ok? See you tomorrow!
- Forecast for the next day:
